Off-leash and recall

A dog who actually comes when you call

Perfect in the backyard. Gone the second there's a squirrel, another dog or an open gate. We build Come step by step, from our yard out to parks and busy places, and off-leash work starts in the 6-week stay.

Sound familiar?

"Come" means "eventually"

The backyard star

Comes every time at home. At the park, you're suddenly invisible.

The chase

Squirrels, bikes, other dogs. One open gate and you're sprinting down the street yelling their name.

What you want

Beaches, trails and dog parks without the worry. A dog who checks in and comes back.

How we'd help

From the yard to the beach

Coming when called is part of every stay. Off-leash work starts in the 6-Week Freedom Builder and goes furthest in the 11-Week Adventure-Ready.

We build Come step by step, from our yard out to bigger and bigger distractions, with field trips to parks and Home Depot. Then, on pickup day, we coach you until your dog comes back for you, too.

What the longer stays add

  • The start of off-leash cues (6 and 11 weeks)
  • Field trips to parks and Home Depot
  • Every skill around heavier distractions
  • Big-distraction practice: beaches, farmers markets (11 weeks)
  • Extended off-leash reliability drills (11 weeks)
  • Advanced impulse control around food and wildlife (11 weeks)

Off-leash is the goal? Then it's 6 or 11 weeks, not 4. We'll tell you what's realistic for your dog on the call.

While they're with us

Their room, their crew, your updates

Their own roomEvery dog sleeps in their own 5×12 room, with other dogs close by for company.
Trainers live hereFour of our trainers live on the property, about 15 feet from the dogs' rooms.
A vet next doorKritter Kamp, an emergency and general vet, is our next-door neighbor.
Weekly videosText or call whenever you're wondering how they're doing, and you'll get update videos of your dog every week.

More than half of our families come from Orange County and Los Angeles. Board and train is built for that: you make the trip at drop-off and again at pickup. See everything about a stay »

Will they listen to me, too?

We train your dog. Then we train you.

01

Pickup day is a lesson

A full hour where you run your dog through everything they learned while we coach you. You leave knowing exactly what to ask for and how.

02

Follow-ups that never expire

2, 3 or 5 follow-up sessions here at our place, depending on your stay. Use them the week after pickup or months later, whenever you want a tune-up.

03

5 to 10 minutes a day

That's all we ask when your dog first comes home. We do the heavy lifting during the stay and show you exactly what to practice. A few minutes a day keeps it going.

How we train

Same goofball. Better manners.

Plenty of trainers won't tell you how they train. Here's exactly how we do it: every plan is built around your dog's quirks, your schedule and your goals.

Rewards come first

Every dog starts with reward-based training: food, toys, praise and play. It's how we teach every new skill.

You decide the rest

Some dogs need more than rewards. If yours does, and only with your OK, we use the gentlest option that works, which can include leash corrections or an e-collar. You get a full walkthrough first, on the phone or when you arrive. Want reward-only training? Then that's what your dog gets.

What we never do

  • Hit or kick
  • Yell or intimidate
  • Pin a dog down ("alpha rolls")
  • Hang a dog by the leash

Their words, not ours

Off the leash, back to you

I can confidently take him to restaurants, the dog park, farmers markets, and more without the anxiety I used to feel.

"Now, Koda no longer pulls on the leash, has reliable recall, and holds commands until I release him, those were my top goals going into training. Because of that, I can confidently take him to restaurants, the dog park, farmers markets, and more without the anxiety I used to feel."

MacKenzie MadsenKoda, 1.5-year-old Australian Shepherd · 6-Week Freedom Builder

I can trust him off leash and he will always be near me.

"My little frenchie did the 11 week training and he came back a whole new dog.… I can trust him off leash and he will always be near me."

Olivia de LisserFrench bulldog · 11-Week Adventure-Ready

Doesn’t pull and is able to walk freely on and off his leash.

"He listens really well now, knows how to sit, down, and responds extremely well to his recall. His walks are amazing now as well. Doesn’t pull and is able to walk freely on and off his leash."

Off-leash questions

Can you do off-leash in 4 weeks?

Coming when called is part of every stay, 4 weeks included. Off-leash work starts in the 6-week stay and goes furthest in 11 weeks.

Will my dog come back for me, not just the trainer?

That's what pickup day is for. You'll spend an hour running your dog through everything while we coach you. After that, 5 to 10 minutes of practice a day keeps it going, and your follow-ups never expire, so they're there whenever you want a tune-up.

Do you use an e-collar for off-leash?

Only if it's part of your dog's training and you've said yes. Every dog starts with rewards, and an e-collar comes in only with your OK, after a full walkthrough. On 6- and 11-week programs, we provide the collar and hand it over at pickup, and your handoff lesson covers how to use it. Want reward-only training? Then that's what your dog gets.

How much does it cost?

$5,900 for 6 weeks or $10,650 for 11 weeks. Every stay includes their own room, training every day at your dog's pace, weekly update videos, a 1-hour handoff lesson at pickup, and follow-up sessions that never expire. Payment plans are available on every program, subject to approval.
