Service dog training

Hoping your dog can be your service dog?

Our 6-Week Freedom Builder has a service-dog option: every dog builds the foundations a service dog needs, and dogs who are ready can earn their service-dog certificate during the stay. Tell us your goals and we'll map out the best path for your dog.

Sound familiar?

Where you might be starting

You've got the dog

A dog you love, who could help you every day if they could stay calm and focused out in the world.

Public places are the hard part

Stores, restaurants, crowds. The dog who's great at home gets distracted, pulls or reacts.

You want a straight answer

Whether your dog can do this, and what it would take to get them there.

How we'd help

Foundations first, then the next level

Every dog in the 6-week stay builds the foundations a service dog needs: solid basics, calm in busy places, and every skill around heavier distractions.

Dogs who are ready can earn their service-dog certificate during the stay. It depends a lot on the dog. If yours isn't ready yet, we'll point you to what fits, and we'll go over the legal side on the call too.

What we train is the obedience every service dog needs: foundations and public manners. We don't train specific tasks, like deep pressure, retrieving or alerting.

What the 6-week stay works on

  • Walk politely on leash, Sit, Down and Stay on the first cue
  • Wait at doors and relax on "Place"
  • Field trips to parks and Home Depot
  • Every skill around heavier distractions
  • The start of off-leash cues
  • The service-dog foundations option

While they're with us

Their room, their crew, your updates

Their own roomEvery dog sleeps in their own 5×12 room, with other dogs close by for company.
Trainers live hereFour of our trainers live on the property, about 15 feet from the dogs' rooms.
A vet next doorKritter Kamp, an emergency and general vet, is our next-door neighbor.
Weekly videosText or call whenever you're wondering how they're doing, and you'll get update videos of your dog every week.

More than half of our families come from Orange County and Los Angeles. Board and train is built for that: you make the trip at drop-off and again at pickup. See everything about a stay »

Will they listen to me, too?

We train your dog. Then we train you.

01

Pickup day is a lesson

A full hour where you run your dog through everything they learned while we coach you. You leave knowing exactly what to ask for and how.

02

Follow-ups that never expire

2, 3 or 5 follow-up sessions here at our place, depending on your stay. Use them the week after pickup or months later, whenever you want a tune-up.

03

5 to 10 minutes a day

That's all we ask when your dog first comes home. We do the heavy lifting during the stay and show you exactly what to practice. A few minutes a day keeps it going.

How we train

Same goofball. Better manners.

Plenty of trainers won't tell you how they train. Here's exactly how we do it: every plan is built around your dog's quirks, your schedule and your goals.

Rewards come first

Every dog starts with reward-based training: food, toys, praise and play. It's how we teach every new skill.

You decide the rest

Some dogs need more than rewards. If yours does, and only with your OK, we use the gentlest option that works, which can include leash corrections or an e-collar. You get a full walkthrough first, on the phone or when you arrive. Want reward-only training? Then that's what your dog gets.

What we never do

  • Hit or kick
  • Yell or intimidate
  • Pin a dog down ("alpha rolls")
  • Hang a dog by the leash

Their words, not ours

Calm in public, with their person

holds commands until I release him

"Now, Koda no longer pulls on the leash, has reliable recall, and holds commands until I release him, those were my top goals going into training. Because of that, I can confidently take him to restaurants, the dog park, farmers markets, and more without the anxiety I used to feel."

MacKenzie MadsenKoda, 1.5-year-old Australian Shepherd · 6-Week Freedom Builder

you guys have allowed us to take him out in public areas without any issues.

"He no longer jumps up on family members… you guys have allowed us to take him out in public areas without any issues."

Will my dog get a service-dog certificate?

Dogs who are ready can earn their service-dog certificate during the 6-week stay. It depends a lot on the dog, so we'll talk it through on the call. If yours isn't ready yet, we'll tell you what would get them there.

Do you train service-dog tasks?

No. We train foundations and public manners, the general obedience every service dog needs: solid basics, calm in public and focus around distractions. We don't train specific tasks, like deep pressure, retrieving or alerting.

My dog isn't calm in public yet. Can they still do this?

That's what the stay is for. Every dog builds calm public manners with field trips and practice around heavier distractions. Tell us where your dog is today and we'll tell you honestly what's realistic.

How much does it cost?

$5,900 for the 6-Week Freedom Builder, or $10,650 for 11 weeks. Every stay includes their own room, training every day at your dog's pace, weekly update videos, a 1-hour handoff lesson at pickup, and follow-up sessions that never expire. Payment plans are available on every program, subject to approval.

Will I learn how to keep it up?

Yes. Pickup day is a full hour where you run your dog through everything while we coach you, and your follow-up sessions never expire.
